Our restaurant, NICK’S ITALIAN KITCHEN, is possibly even more celebrated in traveller circles than our guest house. Once again the guide books sing its praises. One can walk in straight from the street into a spacious yet intimate dining room decorated with old photographs of Tibet and boosting its own mini library, a traveller’s bulleting board, daily newspapers, and free WI-FI facility.
Large windows give an excellent vantage point to observe the ever-changing, fascinating street life of this multi-cultural Himalayan town. While sipping an authentic cappuccino/espresso one can then peruse the extensive, pure-vegetarian menu at leisure. The international cuisine on offer includes everything from scrumptious Italian home-made pasta and pizzas, to Indian curries and chapattis, to Tibetan momo and Thukpa, to plain rice and steamed vegetables, to quiches and savoury pies – & everything in between !
While waiting for the food to be lovingly prepared, one can ogle the elaborate display of freshly-made cakes, biscuits and pies in eager anticipation of dessert. The heavenly choclate brownies with hot chocolate sauce, the cool, tangy lemon cheese cakes, (much loved by Richard Gere!), and creamy Banoffi pies are hot favourites and tend to fly off the shelves. Entire cakes, elaborately decorated for special celebrations, can also be ordered in advance.
Outside of the monsoon season, one’s best bet is to partake of the delicious food out on the large, sunny, south-east facing terrace which offers entrancing and sweeping panoramic views of the river valley below, and the high snow peaks above- which look near enough to touch. A pleasant way to while away a sunny afternoon, meet a friend, fall into conversation with a stranger, write a post card or relax deeply after the stresses and discomforts of travel in India.
Perhaps you want to go sight-seeing, trekking, paragliding or visit temples or monasteries in the vicinity ? do not hesitate to ask our helpful staff about tips for the best trekking agencies, opening times of museums and temples, dates for the next teachings of H.H.
